5 Grammar School Exam Success Tips Every Parent Should Know
Here are five tips I often share with parents to help children feel more prepared (and less pressured) as grammar school exams approach.
1. Start with the Basics
It might sound simple, but a strong grasp of the basics really is the best place to begin. If your child feels secure with their English, maths, and reasoning skills, they’re already off to a great start. So things like regular reading, fun logic games, and a bit of practice here and there can build a strong foundation without making it feel like a chore.
2. Create a Calm Routine
The key word here is routine, not rigid. Try building in some regular revision time across the week. In my experience, short, manageable chunks work best. It might be 20 minutes after school on certain days, or a bit of quiet time at the weekend. We know that children feel more in control when they know what to expect, so a steady rhythm helps learning feel less overwhelming.
3. Try a Few Timed Practice Sessions
Once your child is familiar with the types of questions they’ll see, it’s a good idea to introduce a bit of timed practice. It’s not about adding pressure, far from it. It’s simply about helping them get used to pacing themselves, so the real thing doesn’t feel too daunting. A kitchen timer and a calm, reassuring approach go a long way here.
4. Praise the Process, Not Just the Result
We always encourage children to have a go, even if they get things wrong. That’s how we learn, after all! Let them know that effort matters just as much (if not more) than getting full marks. It’s really important to praise their focus, celebrate the improvements, and reassure them that perfection isn’t the goal. It’s all about progress and confidence.
5. Talk About How They’re Feeling
Even the most confident children can feel a little nervous and that’s totally normal. Make space for relaxed chats about how they’re doing. Sometimes, those little car ride or bedtime conversations are the most insightful. And if anything’s worrying you or your child, don’t hesitate to reach out to a teacher. That’s what we are here for.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
Grammar school exams are just one part of your child’s learning journey, a stepping stone if you like. But with the right preparation, a nurturing environment, and a strong support system at home and school, children can approach the challenge with confidence and pride.
At small Preparatory schools like ours here at The Firs, we ensure children are exam-ready as part of their day-to-day learning. Our curriculum is carefully designed with the admissions process in mind, preparing pupils for both Grammar and Independent School entrance.
We also host an annual Secondary Transfer Evening, giving parents, pupils and staff the chance to meet and speak with representatives from a wide range of local secondary schools. This means we stay up to date with the latest guidance and expectations, so we can give our families the most accurate advice and support.
We’re proud of how our pupils rise to challenges with confidence and resilience – and we’re here to help every step of the way.
