Growing Strong Minds: Building Resilience and a Growth Mindset at The Firs

At The Firs School, we believe education is about much more than right answers and test scores. It’s about nurturing confident, curious learners who see challenges as opportunities and approach life with resilience and optimism. That’s why helping our pupils develop a growth mindset is a key part of our approach.

Embracing Mistakes as Part of the Journey

One of the most valuable lessons we share with our children is that mistakes aren’t setbacks, they’re stepping stones. Whether trying a new strategy in maths or experimenting with an art technique, we encourage pupils to see every challenge as a chance to reflect, adapt, and grow.

By modelling positive responses to setbacks and encouraging self-reflection, we help children understand that success often comes after persistence and problem-solving, not perfection.

A Safe Space to Take Risks

Our classrooms are welcoming, supportive spaces where children are free to ask questions, explore ideas, and stretch themselves without fear of ‘getting it wrong’. Teachers offer gentle encouragement and positive feedback, creating a culture where resilience is celebrated and effort is recognised.

It’s in these moments, when a pupil bravely tries something new or keeps going after a tricky task, that true learning takes place.

Growing in Confidence and Independence

Across the school, children take part in a wide range of activities that help them build confidence and independence. From performing in assemblies and sharing their ideas in class discussions to tackling outdoor learning challenges and completing creative projects, every opportunity is designed to help pupils believe in themselves and their abilities.

These carefully structured experiences allow children to stretch just beyond their comfort zones and feel proud of what they achieve.

At The Firs, we don’t just prepare children for their next lesson we help prepare them for life. By nurturing a growth mindset and encouraging resilience, we’re giving our pupils the tools to thrive, whatever challenges come their way.
