Local Farmer Brings Lessons of Sustainability and Adaptation to Life at The Firs School
The Firs School in Chester was delighted to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Quinlan, local farmers and parents at the school, for a special assembly on Thursday that brought the world of modern farming directly into the classroom.
As part of the school’s ongoing focus on the theme of “Change and Adapt,” Mr. and Mrs. Quinlan delivered a brilliant presentation that showcased how today’s farmers are continually adjusting to changing conditions — from unpredictable weather patterns to rapid technological developments.
Pupils learned about sustainable farming practices, including how planting clover among grass can naturally help manage nitrogen levels in the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers. The assembly was both educational and very interesting, giving children a clear, real-world example of how the principles they learn in the classroom apply in daily life.
The excitement reached a real peak when the Quinlans revealed a tractor on site, which the children loved and sparked plenty of questions and curiosity about farm machinery and life on a farm.
Mr David Girvan, Headteacher at The Firs School, commented:“We are incredibly grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Quinlan for taking the time to share their knowledge and passion with our pupils. It was a very engaging and memorable experience for the children. Real-life examples like these bring learning to life and show our pupils how the values of adaptability and sustainability are so important in the world around them.”
The Firs School is passionate about enriching its curriculum through real-world learning experiences that inspire curiosity, responsibility, and resilience in its pupils.
