All Minds Matter

As World Mental Health Day approaches (10 October, 2023) Mr. David Girvan, the newly appointed headmaster of The Firs School, Chester, shares some top tips on how we can support our young minds and equip them with the life skills required to help them become the best that they can be.

1. Encourage children to talk about their feelings.

Let them know that it's okay to feel sad, happy, angry, or scared at times. Teach them to express their emotions in healthy ways, such as through art, writing, or talking to a trusted adult. Remember to approach these discussions with empathy and create a safe and non-judgmental environment for children to open up about their feelings.

2. Practice self-care and mindfulness:

Help children understand that taking care of their mental health is just as important as taking care of their physical health. Teach them simple self-care activities like deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or relaxation techniques to manage stress. And make sure that they see you practicing self-care too, lead the way.

3. Stay active:

Physical activity is linked to mental well-being. Encourage children to engage in regular physical activities they enjoy, like playing sports, dancing, or going for a bike ride. Exercise can boost mood and reduce stress.

4. Be kind and inclusive:

Teach the importance of kindness and inclusivity. Help them understand that being kind to others and making friends is good for their own mental health as well as others'. Discuss the impact of bullying and why it's important to speak up against it.

5. Seek help when needed:

Let children know that it's okay to ask for help when they're struggling with their emotions. Explain who they can talk to, such as parents, teachers, school pastoral leads, or other trusted adults. Normalise the idea that everyone needs help sometimes.

Mr Girvan, comments, “I am honoured to have been chosen as the new headteacher at The Firs School and I am passionate about treating every child as an individual, developing the whole child academically, socially, and emotionally. I am also a great believer in inspiring children to learn and that a happy environment will ensure that pupils meet their full potential.

“Good mental health, is therefore, a key skill for children to learn from an early age and why we focus on the individual here at The Firs School and on teaching a range of techniques to suit each and every pupil. It's essential to reinforce the message that mental health is as important as physical health and that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

"At The Firs School, Chester we are fortunate to have our very own 'Learning Mentor' a dedicated member of staff whose role is to be that additional listening ear for children and staff. With a dedicated room, named 'The Den' our Learning Mentor promotes positive mental health in the school and supports our students who may be finding life more challenging.”
